Frequently Asked Questions 

1.  How do I get a copy of my local criminal history?

You can get a copy of your local criminal history at the Albany Police Department Main Desk, located at 201 W. Oglethorpe Blvd..  Office hours are from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The fee is eight ($ 8.00).  A Driver’s License, State issued ID or military ID is required.   

2.  If I apply for a job as a teacher or to work at a nursing home, where should I go to request my criminal history?

You can get a copy of your criminal history at the Dougherty County Jail, located at 1302 Evelyn Avenue (phone (229) 430-6674).  Office hours are from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The fee is twelve ($ 12.00) dollars.  A Driver’s License, State issued ID or military ID is required.  Payment in person is done by cash.

3.  How can I get my fingerprints taken for teaching or nursing home positions?

Fingerprinting is done at the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Department, located at the Dougherty County Court House, 225 Pine Avenue.  Applicants for the Dougherty County School System are fingerprinted between 8:00 -11:00a.m. and 12-4p.m., Monday through Friday.  Cost is $10.00 for school applications and $8.00 for most other purposes.  Firearm permit fingerprints require a money order for $24, which is mailed to the State for the processing fee.

4.  How can I get charges removed from my record?

Complete a GCIC record expungement form. This form can be obtained from the front desk at the Albany Police Department, located at 201 W. Oglethorpe Blvd., or click here to download the form. There is a fifteen-dollar ($15.00) non-refundable charge. It normally takes about four to six weeks to complete the process. The District Attorney’s Office is the approving official. You will receive notification by mail of the results.  Office hours are from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

5.  Where can I get a copy of the disposition of a court case or citation?

You can get a copy of the disposition of court cases or citations at the Albany Police Department Main Desk, located at 201 W. Oglethorpe Blvd..  Office hours are from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The fee is three ($3.00) dollars.  A Driver’s License, State issued ID or military ID is required.

6.  Where can I pay my traffic ticket?

City Tickets.  Traffic tickets issued by the Albany Police Department can be paid at the City of Albany Treasurer’s office, 240 Pine Avenue. The office hours are from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

County and State Tickets.  Traffic tickets issued by the Dougherty County Police Department, Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office or the Georgia State Patrol can be paid at the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office, 225 Pine Avenue.  The office hours are from 8:00 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. daily.   Payment must be by money order or certified check.  Personal checks are not accepted.

9.  Where can I obtain a copy of my Driver’s History? 

The Georgia State Patrol Driver’s License Division located at Newton Road. The fee is five dollars ($ 5.00) for a three year printout and Seven dollars ($7.00) for a seven year printout. The office hours are from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

10. Do I need a business license?

If you are selling merchandise or providing services for money or other valuable considerations you do need a business license.  There is a standard $50 application fee.  The occupational taxes vary based on number of employees in the City and gross receipts.  The starting point to get a business license is the City Treasurer’s Office in Room Room 150 of The Central Square Building, 240 Pine Avenue, phone (229) 431-2118.

11. Do I need a business license or permit to have a yard sale?

No, but you are only allowed to have a yard sale or garage sale no more than three weekends a year. Yard sales are only allowable for residential areas.  Yard sales are not allowed at commercially owned business locations.

12. Can I get a business license for a home occupation without having a commercial location?

Yes, all home occupation business license applications have to be approved by the Planning and Development Office. Home occupations cannot be a storefront type business nor can your clientele come to your home to shop or receive services. All sales or services must be provided or delivered to your clientele.  Yard sales are only allowable for residential areas and not commercially owned businesses.

13. Do I need a business license or a catering license to have a private party?

You do not need a business license to have a private function as long as it is limited to your guest and not open to the public.

14. Can I get a one-day alcohol license for a special function?

There are two types of one-day alcohol licenses. Nonprofit organizations can get a one-day alcohol if they are a true nonprofit organization and have a I.R.S. form 501(C) that certifies them as a nonprofit organization. Nonprofit fee is $25.00 per day, not more than two days per year.  The other option is to contract with a licensed business that already holds an alcohol consumption license to cater your function. This will require that the person holding the alcohol license apply for an Off-Premise Alcohol Catering Permit. These types of licenses need to be applied for well in advance of the planned function because of the lengthy approval process. The fee for this type license is $50 per day.

15. Do I need an Alcoholic Beverage Handlers I.D. card to work as a server in a restaurant that also serves alcohol beverages?

If your primary job is the service of meals and you only serve alcoholic drinks incidental to the service of meals you do not need an alcoholic Beverage handlers I.D. Card.

16. How long does it take to get an alcohol license approved?

It takes approximately four to six weeks to get an alcohol license approved depending upon when the application is received.

17. What types of bonds are accepted for getting my friend or relative released from jail on a City of Albany charge?  

The City of Albany accepts cash bonds, bonding company bonds or property bonds.  The City Treasurer’s Office is the place to go for posting bond during normal business hours, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., excluding holidays.  After hours during weekends and holidays, bonds are accepted at the Albany Police Department Main Desk, located at 201 W. Oglethorpe Blvd..   Information on the bonding companies in the City of Albany can be found in the local telephone directory.  Telephone inquiries during the normal business day should be made to the treasurer’s Office at (229) 431-2118 or the Municipal Court at (229) 431-2865.  Inquiries can be made after hours and on weekends and holidays to the Albany Police Department Main Police Desk at (229) 431-2100.
