The Traffic Division coordinates efforts for the safe and efficient movement of vehicles and pedestrians within the city and county. Responsibilities include installation and maintenance of traffic signals, signs and roadway markings together with conducting studies and preparing plans for implementing necessary modifications to improve traffic flow.

Planning & Design

The Planning & Design Section is responsible for the following:

  • Addressing neighborhood traffic problems
  • Reviewing site and subdivision plans
  • Conducting traffic counts and speed zone analysis
  • Coordinating streetlight installation
  • Traffic signal design
  • Maintaining the computerized traffic signal system
  • Site impact traffic analysis
  • Reviewing Use Permit and Rezoning applications
  • Interdepartmental coordination on a variety of projects
  • Street and Intersection design
  • Parking and Access Studies 
  • Pedestrian and Bicycle Planning

The Signal Section is responsible for the installation of new traffic signals and the maintenance of 136 existing traffic signals, 45 school flashers and 25 warning flashers throughout the city and county.

The Signs & Markings Section is responsible for sign fabrication, sign installation and the repair and maintenance of roadway signing along city and county maintained rights-of-way. Additionally, this section is responsible for the maintenance and installation of pavement markings on city and county maintained roadways.
