ALLEY PAVING

Alleys are selected to be paved based on criteria reviewed by the Engineering Department Director and representatives of the Public Works Department. Before making recommendations, these individuals review their records to determine the number of calls for maintenance and/or drainage problems.

When each Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) allocation takes effect, each City Commissioner is requested to submit one alley in their ward to be paved. Public Works officials will recommend an alley to be paved based on citizen complaints as well. Often the commissioners agree with the alley the Public Works Department has recommended to be paved because commissioners have received complaints regarding the same alleys. The final alley paving list is approved by the Board of City Commissioners.

The list is then submitted to the Engineering Department for design work, and the construction work is contracted out. The ability to complete the alley paving list depends on the amount of expense that is involved. If funds are low, costly projects may be put on hold to utilize available funding on projects that are not as costly.
